HCPC registered and BPS Chartered Counselling Psychologist offering integrative, evidence-based therapy in a safe and compassionate space.

About Me

Dr Clarissa Bartlett

I am a HCPC registered Counselling Psychologist (Reg No. PYL31856). Since 2015, I have worked in primary and secondary mental health care, as well as inpatient services within the NHS. Currently, I work as a Senior Psychologist for Sussex Community Foundation NHS Trust and practice privately in the Brighton and Hove area.

I enjoy working with clients from diverse backgrounds and with a range of difficulties. I am interested in how our past relationships and experiences affect how we currently function in life, with particular interests in mindfulness-based interventions, attachment-informed and neurobiological approaches.

On a personal note, I was born in Burma (Myanmar) and moved to the U.K. as a young child. Growing up in two cultures has given me an appreciation of people from different backgrounds and identities, and helps me bring a grounded, practical approach to therapy.

"Mindfulness is a pause — the space between stimulus and response: that's where choice lies."
— Dr Tara Brach

Compassion & Honesty

I value honesty, integrity, equality, compassion and genuine relationships. While no one has all the answers, we can work together to find solutions.

Integrative Approach

I draw on third-wave therapies such as MBCT, ACT and CFT — evidence-based approaches with the potential to create fundamental, lasting changes.

Safe & Non-Judgemental

Above all, I place importance on the quality of the therapeutic relationship, always endeavouring to work in a safe, non-judgemental and empathic way.

Common Questions

What happens in the initial consultation?

We'll discuss your concerns and reasons for seeking therapy, what you'd like to achieve, and whether I'm the right psychologist for you. It's also an opportunity to ask questions and voice any concerns.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no fixed number of sessions required. It depends on your personal needs, circumstances and what you want from therapy. Sessions usually take place once a week and can be discussed and reviewed on an ongoing basis.

What are the fees?

The fee for an initial consultation and subsequent sessions is £100. I reserve a few spaces at a lower fee for students, trainees and those on lower incomes. Payment is by cash or bank transfer before the appointment.

Do you accept health insurance?

Yes, I am a recognised practitioner with Bupa, Aviva, Vitality Health and AXA-PPP. Please contact your insurer beforehand to arrange authorisation.

Therapies

My therapeutic approach

I primarily draw on third-wave therapies — evidence-based approaches interested in helping you be more present, compassionate and at ease with yourself.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

A programme developed to help people who suffer recurrent depression and prevent relapse. Based on Jon Kabat-Zinn's MBSR programme, MBCT helps you understand the patterns of your mind and see how certain thought patterns lead to escalation of emotions.

Practising mindfulness gives you courage to face distressing moods, thoughts and sensations without fighting them — transforming how you relate to unpleasant experiences and viewing them from a different perspective.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) & Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)

Third-wave cognitive-behavioural therapies that blend traditional CBT with mindfulness, acceptance and compassion. These approaches emphasise openness, awareness and committed action.

Rather than trying to eliminate difficult thoughts and feelings, these approaches help you be more present and at ease with yourself, others and the world — creating space for meaningful change.

Relational & Neurobiological Approaches

Drawing on current research in the treatment of trauma, integrating Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Internal Family Systems, mindfulness-based approaches and clinical hypnosis.

Rather than focusing solely on desensitising event memories, this approach prioritises transformation and repair of trauma-related states through cultivating new experiences and learning mindfulness skills.
